Analyzing a Novel: The Kite Runner

1. Who was your favorite character and why? Which character did you dislike most throughout the story and why?
Hassan, was my favorite character because he went through alot living in Afghanistan trying to survive, and by him getting raped by Assef, i think that just made him a stronger person. The person that i dislikes throughout the whole book was Assef and his friend because they were so wrong to rape an innocent boy, i'm kind of glad that Assefs friend died in the gas tank. Nobody deserves to die but then again nobody deserves to get raped, but i think that thats what he gets.

4. What is the historic time, place and social background of the novel? How does it affect what happens in the story?
The historic time was in the 90's when the Russians tried to take over Afghanistan, Where from 1996-2001 during "Operation Enduring Freedom". The Taliban has regrouped scince 2004 and revived as a strong insurgency movement governing at the local leval and fighting a "Guerilla War" against the governments of Afghanistan and Pakistan. It affects what happens in the story because the Russians are trying to take over there country so they have to move before "them or their people" get killed, hurt or tortured.

3. Which did you enjoy better, the novel or the movie? Please give specific reasons why.
I enjoyed the book more, because the book had more detail, alot was going on, it explained how the characters felt. The settings throughout the book was well detailed. But i really like the movie also it was interesting i actually got to saw what the character looked like. I thought it was cool because, Our class been reading this book for a long time and the book has just been describing the character to us and it was interesting to finally see what my favorite character looked like. But i loved the book more.

7. What is the theme of the novel? What do you think was the message the author was trying to convey by writing this book?

Betrayal
, because Amir betrays Hassan by framing him for theft.

Redemption
, cause Amir tries to make it up to Hassan by adopting Sohreb, many other characters try to find redemption like Baba .
Guilt
, Amir feels guilt his entire life for what he did to Hassan and for not helping him when he was getting raped.
Lying
, Baba lies to Amir by not telling him that Hassan was his brother.
Honor
because Baba kept his secret about Hassan because of what society might say.
